The Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. - Happy Birthday

 For Martin Luther King Day - Kylan's first day off of the year!- we decided to take a family trip into San Francisco. Our plan was to go to Chinatown and buy some kites then take them to Golden Gate Park to fly them. Sounds fun, right? We started in Chinatown and enjoyed wandering the streets but were quickly informed that there were no kites to be purchased? Plan A out. 

Hmmm, time to improvise...

Part of our plan had also been to ride the cable cars, and while we were walking to find the rail where we could hop on, we happily stumbled upon the SF Cable Car Museum! What a fun surprise! We got to watch how the cables were powered, see them run under the city, sit in an old car, and read lots of old newspaper articles about the rise and fall of the cable car - my favorite!

Riding the cable car down to the bay front, what an adventure! A little frightening, and after our ride I'm not very surprised that the cable car has been phased out!

 The best view of the bridge that we've ever had. It was sunny, clear and cold! Mystery of the day...why in the world were those crazy people swimming laps in the bay?!?! Without a wetsuit.

 

Another happy surprise of the day was that the maritime museum on Hyde Pier was free! We were able to tour all of the big "Captain Hook" ships (as Serelle called them). It was a beautiful day and such a fun surprise to be able to explore all of the ships.

  Trying really hard to enjoy fish and chips on the curb at Fisherman's Wharf - the girls' faces are a little more telling of how we actually felt. 

A San Francisco must-do that I don't think we will ever do again! 

 Although we were unable to follow our original plan of flying beautiful Chinese kites at the park, we ended up having a really fun day and were able to enjoy many new sights of San Francisco. Plus, we found these two beautiful "Mulan" dress ups. For sure the hit of the day!
